The choice of your door handles depends on different criteria.
With or without a key, with or without a deadlatch button, the choice of your locking system depends on the room where the door is installed.
Keyless locking systems
Keyless locking systems have no fixation system and are generally used for doors of kitchen or living/dining rooms. The door handles in this case have no hole and are supplied with a plate or non-pierced rose.
An interior door, inside the house, is generally not subject to environmental constraints, and the lockable mechanism of the door is optional. Apart from their functional aspect, the interior door handles play a decorative role in the house.
Key-operated locking systems
Key-operated locking systems allow to block the door, therefore the door handle is offered with a key hole or a cylinder hole depending on the type of a lock installed in the door.
Key-operated systems allow to restrict access to some areas such as the cellar, the garage, your study, your bedroom… These systems allow to secure a given single room, protect your privacy or provide separation of spaces.
A pad handle for the entrance door exposed to weather constraints and equipped with a secure cylinder to protect your house. It is therefore important to choose an appropriate handle for entrance doors.
Fixation locking systems
Fixation locking systems on a privacy button operated from the inside are typically used for bathrooms or toilet doors (with or without an indicator).
Your handle can have an elongated “lever” shape, allowing to open your door with a downward push on the hand. Your door can be equipped with a single lever at just one side or a dual lever for operating the opening of the door from the 2 sides
Your handle can be a knob, where the locking and unlocking of your door is effected by turning the knob. Your door can be equipped with a single knob at just one side or dual knobs at the 2 sides of the door.
There are also pull handles - with different finish depending on the selected model – which can be gripped with a hand and allowing the opening of the door by pushing or pulling (for landing doors, gates...)
A recessed handle is recommended for sliding or retractable doors.
Covering plate
Covering plates are attached with binding screws holding the ends of the plate from the two sides of the door. The handle is kept in place by the plate and by the fixing square spindle. Check the centre spacing of your covering plate
Rose
The roses are attached with wood screws. The handle is kept in place by the plate, by the fixing square spindle and by a grub screw fixing the handle on the square spindle. The grub screw is fixed using an Allen wrench
Check the diameter of the fixing square spindle that varies from 6 to 8 mm.
6 mm for patio door handles or lock handles or horizontal rim locks. 7 mm for entrance door and interior door handles (most of doors in France) 8 mm for some handles for landing doors or in certain regions (ALSACE)
N.B.: There are adapter couplers that allow to make a transition from an 8mm square spindle to a 7mm one, or 7mm to 6mm
If your lock is fixation type, measure the centre spacing of the lock that is the distance between the square spindle of the handle and the hole of the locking mechanism or cylinder. The standard distance is 70 mm (92mm for certain PVC doors)
Make sure to measure the distance between the points of fixations of the covering plate (between the top and bottom holes). Typically, this distance is 165mm or 195mm.
Set of handles
Most of the time, we choose a set in which the door handles are sold in a pair with dual levers or dual knobs. Sets are usually available with a covering plate or rose.
A half set
There are also “half-sets” composed from a single handle with a single covering plate. In this way, one can install the handles of two different styles at either side of the same door in order to maintain consistence with the atmosphere of each room.
