Mortise locks are fitted and secured in the thickness of the door (in a pocket). As these locks are invisible, the aesthetics of your door is not compromised, and you can choose a handle and other door trim such as decorative plates to your convenience and your taste. There are different criteria to consider when choosing your mortise lock.
You should especially consider the quality of the lock (anti-corrosion, with a hole in the cylinder...), the number of anchoring points and the level of protection provided by the cylinder and the key.
A kitchen door lock does not require as much security as an office door or an access door to a sensitive location. Thus, a mortise lock without a key hole (a sash lock) that simply holds the door in the closed (but not locked) position will be chosen for a living room door while a deadlatch will be preferable for a bathroom (for closing and locking the door). A lock for bathroom and toilet doors must offer the deadlatching button option.
Good for service doors with a possibility to choose a model that supports role-based access system or a master key system (1 key that opens all doors). The security level is generally high.
For gates, Entrance doors and sliding windows as well as for interior doors.
The technical specifics to be taken into account includes the choice between a latch bolt and a hook that enhances the protection of your locking system... These locks are treated against corrosion.
Metal doors must be fitted with mortise locks with a special profile (the profile and the lock’s housing should be rather narrow...).
For interior doors that are not required to block access. A door between rooms, whose locking and unlocking is effected simply by operating the latch with handle, a flap or a button
The locking is effected by a key. The choice of the key will in large part determine the security level of your mortise lock.
A deadlatch button from the inside prevents the opening of the door (a bathroom,a toilet, a study... and deadlatches are more and more used for bedrooms).
The cylinder that performs the opening and locking (latching) is interchangeable. This type of a lock allows to increase its security level by choosing high security cylinders.
Unlike single-point locks that have only a single latching point, the multipoint locks provide latching of the door at several latching points. Thus, they allow to enhance security and reduce the number of operation points to a single locking and unlocking point which commands 3 or 5 latching points with a single key, all at once.
The most common multipoint mortise locks have 3 locking points: at the top, at the bottom, and in the middle of the door. However, there are multipoint locks with 5 or 7 latching points. The turn of the key mechanically drives various locking points.
The central lateral bolt is usually a rectangular deadbolt that slides into the striker of the frame (the striker being housing that accommodates the bolt). The top and bottom deadbolts can be either rectangular or rolled rods (faceplate mounted round deadbolts sliding into a striker).
There are 7 dimensions that shall be taken into account, and it is important to take these measurements before you buy your mortise lock:
– The backset and the centre spacing of your mortise lock
– The length and width of the faceplate
– The depth and thickness of the housing
– The measurement of the square spindle
Corresponds to the distance between the outer edge of the faceplate and the central axis of the cylinder’s key hole or the deadlatch button hole, depending on the selected model
is the distance between the central axis of the square spindle of the handle and the central axis of the cylinder, the key hole or the deadlatch button hole, depending on the selected model
- It is agreed that the length is always 230 mm in order to allow everyone to freely replace its lock with another model, especially for wooden doors. - It is agreed that the conventional width is 20 mm in order to allow everyone to freely replace its lock with another model, especially for wooden doors. However, it is best to check these measurements before changing the lock. This will prevent you from having to chisel your door or filling the holes
As it was discussed previously, the appropriate thickness of the mortise lock housing will be determined by the type of a door and its material as well as the door profile.
Whether you retain your old handles or you wish to put new ones, it is always better to know the size of the square spindle of the lock handle which will allow you to choose the right handle model.
NF (French certification): NF certification guarantees that the manufacturing quality meets such criteria as the size, personal safety, endurance, durability, resistance… (To learn more about NF certification, please visit our NF certification tips page: see the reference page)
CE (European conformity) the CE mark refers to the requirements of security, public health and consumer protection in compliance with the European Standards (To learn more about CE, please visit our CE tips page: See the reference page))
A2P (Insurance Prevention Protection): The A2P certification is granted to security products for resistance to break-ins, when compliant to the established technical specifications. The A2P Mark is especially appreciated by insurance companies and may be a major criterion in the choice of your mortise lock. An A2P* certified lock resists more than 5 minutes of break-in attempts, an A2P** one – more than 10 minutes, and an A2P*** resists more than 15 minutes. (To learn more about A2P certification, please visit our A2P certification tips page: See the reference page))
Standard keys are also called reproducible keys because they can be straightforwardly and easily duplicated from a blank, that is by simply providing your key specimen. Reproduction can be performed by any locksmith and does not require special machinery.
Unlike most of the keys that can only be inserted in one single orientation, the reversible key can be inserted either way. In other words, the insertion into the keyhole of a reversible key can be done with the key facing either side.
It consists of a round shank whose blade has one or two cams with different grooves (right or left) and notches of different heights.
Also called an L-key (because of its shape) or grooved key, it is a key with a blade having one or more grooves but without levers in the bolt mechanism.
NOTE:
If your mortise lock is configured to accommodate an interchangeable cylinder, then the key security depends on the chosen cylinder model (see our tips page: Choose your cylinder >>). It is possible, for example, to choose a cylinder with a master key which will allow you to use a single key to open all your doors (see our tips page to know all about the master key >>)
The cylinder is an important part of your lock. The choice of your cylinder will therefore determine the protection level of your installation. You should particularly look at the type of protection provided by the cylinder: whether the cylinder is protected against tearing, drilling, smashing, picking, bumping, or snapping (See our tips page on cylinders and types of protection >>)
Most of the time it is reversible and is to be oriented depending on the door opening direction.
For swinging doors – the bolt finds its place in the door frame mounted striker regardless of the opening direction
For gates, Entrance doors and sliding windows. In the case of interior doors, we call it a comb lock (interior sliding doors).
Standard or anti corrosion finish
While the standard finish is sufficient for interior doors inside a house, it is important to choose an anti-corrosion finish in the case of an installation of an entrance door lock or an outdoors one.
Before you go and buy your new mortise lock, check the shape of the tip of the faceplate in order to choose the right model – by doing so you won’t have to return to the store or to chisel your door edge.
Traditionally, there are 4 colour: Silver metallic, white, black and brown (each manufacturer usually has its own variation of brown, less or more dark, less or more golden).
Wooden doors are used in both outdoors and indoors installations with standard. PVC or aluminium doors’ profiles (frames) are often less thick, and the respective lock housing is generally narrower. PVC or aluminium Doors are used exclusively outdoors (or sometimes as a service door) and are more often available with multi-point locks).
N.B.: Door Quality: it is preferable to install your mortise lock in a door that is solid enough and thick enough. The mortise lock may weaken your door if it is too thin or not suitable (hollow doors…). Nevertheless, if your 3-point A2P lock discourages the burglar to attack your lock, one might attempt to go straight through a door panel or else to exert pressure on the door hinges with a crowbar to wrench out a piece of wood from the door or from its frame, especially if your house is isolated and the noise cannot alert your neighbours.
Electric locks are used to open a door remotely. To transform your current lock into an electric lock, you simply need to replace the striker with an electric striker: the door unlocking can then be triggered remotely with a push of a button.
