How to choose your rim lock ?

The rim lock is a door lock with an exposed housing. His housing is mounted directly on the door. Rim locks are easy to install. They are mounted with screws on the frame and the door face which ensures good resistance to tearing. Rim locks are used when the door thickness does not permit a mortise lock, but also with antique or traditional doors or gates. There are different criteria to consider when choosing your rim lock

1. CHOICE BY THE APPLICATION (DOMAIN OF USE)

You should especially consider the quality of the lock (anti-corrosion for a house, a hangar...), the number of anchoring points and the level of protection provided by the cylinder and the key.

Usually, panic locks are used with a lateral bar facilitating emergency evacuation, another popular option is push bar locks equipped with an emergency release latches on the inside (where the push bar operates the deadbolt and the latch bolt).

2. MODELS OF LOCKS

HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL LOCK

Vertical locks are designed for doors of a narrow profile, while horizontal locks are used for doors of a wide profile.

PULL KNOB OR HANDLE LOCKING

The locking and unlocking can be done with a handle (or a button) attached to the front of the lock housing (a spindle lock) or so with a pull knob at the side face of the lock (a pull knob lock).

Rim locks are sold with a cylinder and a  button (lockable with a key from the outside and with a button from the inside)  or a double round cylinder version (lockable with a key from the inside and  outside)

For European profile cylinder
If your lock is configured to  accommodate an interchangeable cylinder, then the key security depends on the  chosen cylinder model (see our tips page: Choose your cylinder).
It is therefore possible to enhance the level of security by using a  proper cylinder or, for example, to choose a cylinder with a master key which  will allow you to use a single key to open all your doors (see our tips page to  know all about the master key: See the reference page))

Simple safety
Locking and unlocking is effected with  an L-key or a grooved key eve, the cam (the lower part of square or rectangular  shape) has grooves to operate the locking and unlocking.

Lever tumbler
The key’s cam has grooves and also  cavities of different heights. The levers are moving parts which, while pushed  with a spring, hold the deadbolt in a fixed position, and release it only under  the key’s action when locking or unlocking.

Mortise locks with a single handle or with a locking button

Sash lock
A rim lock with just a handle. This type  of a lock allows to snap the door closed but not secure. They are usually used  when it is not possible to install a mortise lock.

Some rim locks are unlocked with a  revolving knob, while others are also equipped with a deadlatch knob

4. NUMBER OF ANCHOR POINTS

Unlike single-point locks that have only a single latching point, the multipoint locks provide latching of the door at several latching points. Thus, they allow to enhance security and reduce the number of operation points to a single locking and unlocking point which commands 3 latching points with a single key, all at once. The most common multipoint rim locks have 3 locking points: at the top, at the bottom, and in the middle of the door. However, there are multipoint locks with up to 12 latching points. The turn of the key mechanically drives various locking points. Multi-point rim locks have the central locking mechanism that operates several bolts which are caught at different anchor points. There are 2 possible configurations depending on the anchor bolts of your lock (the deadbolt is the moving part that enters the striker to lock the door): - Either a central lateral bolt that blocks the door opening attempts by pushing against the bulk of the frame , a top bolt that blocks the door opening at the top of the frame, and a bottom bolt that secures the door at the floor. - or a central lateral bolt, a top lateral bolt and a bottom lateral bolt, all of which secure the door by pushing against the bulk of the frame.

5. BACKSET AND CENTRE SPACING

Corresponds to the distance between the outer edge of the lock housing and the central axis of the cylinder’s hole, the key hole or the deadlatch button hole, depending on the selected model

It is always better to know the size of the square spindle of the lock handle which will allow you to choose the right handle model. The standard width of the square spindle is 6 mm, 7mm or 8mm, and the standard length is 75 mm.

Hint

To replace your rim lock, consider to  measure the housing of your old model. By choosing a same-size or bigger rim  lock, you will ensure that the holes in the door from the previous lock will be  hidden.

6. A2P CERTIFICATION (INSURANCE PREVENTION PROTECTION)

The A2P (insurance Prevention Protection) certification is an important element to consider when choosing you rim  lock. This A2P certification is granted to security products for resistance to  break-ins, when compliant to the established technical specifications. The A2P  mark is especially appreciated by insurance companies that can consider this  criterion as being an additional security guarantee.

An A2P* certified lock resists more than  5 minutes of break-in attempts, an A2P** one – more than 10 minutes, and an  A2P*** resists more than 15 minutes of break-in attempts. (To learn more about  A2P certification, please visit our A2P certification tips page: See the reference page)).

7. PROTECTION

Anti-tearing striker protection

The striker plate is fastened to the front face of the frame as well as to the side of the frame. The striker is placed at the level of the bolt, however, for some models of 3-point locks the striker covers the entire height of the frame and is fastened with screws along the entire length of the striker.

The saw rubs against a roller preventing the teeth of the saw to cut the bolt. Hardened treated steel pins provide protection against cutting the deadbolt.

Also called an L-key (because of its shape) or grooved key, it is a key with a blade having one or more grooves but without levers in the bolt mechanism.

HOOK LATCH

Unlike most of the keys that can only be inserted in one single orientation, the reversible key can be inserted either way. In other words, the insertion into the keyhole of a reversible key can be done with the key facing either side.

Pump keys

Pump keys are equipped with fins for driving the lock opening mechanism by a pushing movement followed by a turn. Axial pumps can be equipped with false notches ensuring high resistance to break-in by picking or an assembly of radial pistons and driver pins for radial protection (the pins are placed in a circular pattern) or an available key anti-ejection system that adds great comfort of use.

9. OTHER VERSIONS

Hook Latch

For gates, exterior doors or cellar doors. When in the locked position, the hook snaps on the striker, which adds security.

Adjustable bolt

The length of the bolt can be adjusted  in order to adapt the lock to a non-standard door (gates…).

Electrical remote control

An electric lock is intended for remote  opening for entrances to buildings, medical facilities… An electric striker  can be mounted on the frame of the grille, the porch or the entrance door. It  uses low voltage (8/12 volts), and by pressing the control button located  inside the building one can remotely release the latch bolt and thus unlock the  door.

In the event of power outage, unlocking is performed manually using the  key that in this case operates the dent of the latch bolt.
A transformer and a spring are typically offered for the ejection of the  door.
This lock can be fitted with a double cylinder or a cylinder and a  button.

Tubulaire

They are also called knob locks.  Aesthetic, simple and easy to operate, this lock of a monobloc design  incorporates the locking mechanism, as well as the latch bolt and the handle.

This type of a lock is mainly used in the hotel sector, as well as in  office and apartment buildings, and has various locking modes: sash, deadlatch,  dual key holes and the locking cylinder.
Most of the models offer the function of “always free” (keyless) exit.

Panic locks

Locks designed for service doors in  order to facilitate emergency evacuation. They are reversible and are equipped  with a sidebar for opening from the inside. A simple push on this bar causes  withdrawal of the latch bolt from the striker, and allows immediate opening of  the door by pushing at any moment.

Optional outside handle and cylinder allow opening and locking from the  outside.
While the base model has 1 lateral anchor point, it is possible to add a  kit top and bottom rods and thus obtain a 3-point anchorage lock.

10. FINISH

Stamped or cambered housing

The level of security may depend on the manufacturing process of your rim lock’s housing. A lock with a cambered (by bending) housing is less resistant than a lock with a stamped housing (by striking - no apparent bends).

Faired lock – rod cover and guide cover

-The shroud is a cover used for the  multipoint locks. It covers the entire length of the lock along the door and  brings improved aesthetics to the product.

– Guide covers protect the rod guides of  multipoint rim locks, in which the rods may be exposed or covered with a rod  cover.

– The rod covers made of metal or PVC  have a trough shape that hide the set of rods in multipoint locks.

Standard or anti corrosion finish

While a standard finish is sufficient  for interior doors inside a house, it is important to choose an anti-corrosion  finish in the case of lock installation on the entrance door, outdoors or in a  humid environment.

Colours

Traditionally, there are 4 colours: silver metallic, white, black and brown (each manufacturer usually has its own variation of brown, less or more dark, less or more golden).
