CHANGING A CYLINDER

HOW  TO CHANGE YOUR CYLINDER?

Contrary  to conventional wisdom, it is very easy to change a cylinder. All you need is a  screwdriver and a meter!

• Why change the cylinder?

You  may need to change your door cylinder for various reasons:

Your  lock is defective or was forced.

You  have a dual-keyhole cylinder, and you want to install a lock model on a key and  button for convenience of opening from the inside.

You  lent your keys but you no longer want the person to whom you had entrusted a  key to come.

You  are moving into a new home or new office, you lost your keys, and you don’t  want to take any risk.

You  want a high-security lock in order to enhance the level of protection against  burglary.

You  want to open several doors with the same key (see master key)

You  want to migrate to an electronic opening system.

1. DISMANTLING THE OLD CYLINDER

Before you buy your new cylinder, you need to measure the sides of your old cylinder. To find out your old lock dimensions, you must dismantle it – pull it from the door:

Open your door and position yourself facing its edge.

Remove the mounting screw that is located on the edge of your door at the level of the lock*

Slowly rotate the key, if it is a dual keyhole cylinder, or the button, if it is a cylinder on a button, in the unlocking direction to clear the cam (or rotor), and then pull your cylinder

* N.B.: If your door uses trim elements such as a protective handle covering plate put on the lock, start by loosening the screws of the trim in order to have a little play to remove the cylinder and disconnect the elements of your door locking system.

2. MEASURING YOUR CYLINDER

You will now be able to measure the length of the cylinder. The total length of your cylinder is equal to the sum of two measures, A and B, representing the 2 sides along the axis of the mounting screw (A (your home’s interior side) + B (the exterior side)).

Place the cylinder end towards you so the cam is on your right.

Use the meter to measure the 2 sides which lie respectively to the left and to the right of the fixation screw hole,

starting your measurements from the left edge of your cylinder.

* N.B.: Make sure to measure the thickness of your trim elements, such as the door handle covering plate, and add them to your cylinder measurements.

3. INSTALLING A NEW CYLINDER

These side measurements will help you choose a cylinder with the correct dimensions. Enjoy your new cylinder! (see How to choose your cylinder), we will be able to install it in your door:

Put the new cylinder into its housing by slightly turning the cam in the door unlocking direction so that the cam does not obstruct the passage of the cylinder

Push your cylinder into the edge of the door – once the 2 ends of your cylinder flush with the edge of the door or with the trim, you can fasten your cylinder with a fixation screw that is screwed from the side edge of your door.

*N.B.: Do not apply force. If you have difficulty to drive the screw, this is because your cylinder is misaligned. Slightly move your cylinder until it is perfectly aligned. Once you found alignment, screw all the way to completely tighten the screw and the cylinder.

4. VERIFICATION OF CYLINDER OPERATION

Finally check that your cylinder properly locks and unlocks. This works. Your new cylinder is now installed!

* N.B.: Make sure to tighten the screws of the trim.
